Structure and Biomechanical Principles
Structural Characteristics: It is typically fabricated by bending 0.45 mm stainless steel round wire. The spring features five curved, "petal-like" loops, with hooks at both ends for fixation.
Biomechanics: Based on the arch form of the dental arch, applying a torque moment with the five-loop spring generates reactive forces. The central and lateral incisors receive the required torque, while the canines serve as anchorage and undergo opposite axial tipping (a phenomenon known as the "spoke effect").
Torque Control: This appliance is specifically designed for the fine-tuning of labiolingual inclination in the anterior segment (from canine to canine) of both the maxillary and mandibular arches. It is commonly used for precise adjustments following root-controlled retraction with clear aligners, or for torque expression in conventional fixed appliance therapy.

Torque Control: This appliance is specifically designed for the fine-tuning of labiolingual inclination in the anterior segment (from canine to canine) of both the maxillary and mandibular arches. It is commonly used for precise adjustments following root-controlled retraction with clear aligners, or for torque expression in conventional fixed appliance therapy.
Side Effect Management: Due to the interactive nature of torque forces, improper manipulation (such as applying positive torque in the gingival area) can easily lead to the formation of scattered spaces (diastemas) in the anterior teeth.
Operational Precautions
Direction Determination: The orientation of the tips is directly related to the direction of the torque. Tips pointing occlusally generate positive torque, while those pointing gingivally generate negative torque. Similarly, if the hooks at both ends face mesially (inward), it indicates positive torque; if they face distally (outward), it indicates negative torque.
Fixation Requirements: After inserting the spring into the anterior brackets, the tips of all five loops must be tightly ligated to the archwire using ligature wires. This prevents the spring from sliding intraorally, which would alter the moment arm length and compromise the treatment outcome.
Auxiliary Measures: To prevent the formation of scattered spaces (diastemas) in the anterior teeth, it is generally recommended to splint the anterior segment with an elastic chain before application. If the hooks tend to irritate the oral mucosa, they can be coated with flowable composite resin for protection.
