The Lingual Sheath is a commonly used auxiliary orthodontic attachment. Typically made of medical-grade stainless steel with a polished surface, it offers excellent biocompatibility and corrosion resistance, allowing for long-term intraoral use without triggering any rejection reactions. There are three types of Lingual Sheath: no hook, left hook, right hook. The packaging method for Lingual sheath is 10 pieces per bag.
Three types of Lingual Sheath
Core Function
Its core function is to serve as a sliding channel for archwires or as an anchorage point. When used in conjunction with devices like transpalatal arches and lingual arches, it helps control the rotation, tipping, and bodily movement of molars. It plays a critical role in stabilizing posterior anchorage and preventing unwanted mesial movement during treatment. Additionally, some models feature traction hooks for attaching elastic chains to perform intermaxillary traction or for fine-tuning individual teeth.
Clinical Application
This attachment is primarily used during the middle to late stages of fixed appliance treatment. It is especially suitable for complex cases, such as extraction therapy, deep overbite, and crossbite. While its design balances mechanical efficiency with patient comfort, its lingual position may cause slight, temporary interference with speech and tongue movement when first worn, requiring a brief adaptation period.
