Product Introduction
Orthodontic bands are typically made of metal. They are pre-formed metal rings specifically designed to fit snugly around the crown of a tooth (usually a molar), serving as the anchorage foundation for the entire orthodontic appliance system. Buccal tubes or question-mark hooks are usually welded onto the outer surface. The main archwire runs through these metal tubes, and all orthodontic forces ultimately converge and are transmitted here.
Acting as a
"metal armor" for molars, bands are essential tools for establishing
anchorage and securing orthodontic appliances during treatment. Although small
and positioned in the back of the mouth, they play a crucial role in ensuring
treatment outcomes and maintaining oral health.
Bands are
generally applied to the first and second molars (tooth positions 6 and 7). In
China, there are 20 standard sizes ranging from #16 to #35, while
internationally, there are 25 sizes ranging from #32 to #44. They come in two
main types: plain bands and bands with pre-welded buccal tubes.
Advantages
1. They
provide stable retention and are highly resistant to rust and deformation.
Pre-formed resin bands are occasionally used for primary teeth in children or
in specific restorative scenarios; however, metal bands remain the mainstream
choice due to their superior strength.
2. Compared to
conventional brackets that are bonded directly to the tooth surface, bands wrap
around more than half of the posterior tooth crown, offering exceptionally
strong retention. Posterior teeth (molars) endure the greatest occlusal forces
during chewing and serve as the "anchors" for moving the entire
dental arch. The more stable these anchors are, the more effectively the
anterior teeth can be pulled into position. If conventional brackets were
bonded directly to these high-stress areas, they would easily debond or
fracture during chewing or under functional loads.
